Melastomataceae

Melastoma Family

Osbeckia stellata Busch.-Ham. ex Ker Gawl.
Stary Osbeckia
Nepali: Seto chulsi
The leaves are very distinctive and I knew that one flower sometime during the monsoon. So by the end of August, I finally found one in bloom. It was on the road in a rocky area at about 1950m (range is from 1300 to 2600m). The 5cm wide purple-pink flowers with stamens all the same, yellow gently curving over a pale-colored stigma were easily spotted. The hairy calyx had only one flower at this time but others would appear within weeks.
